For five days, Frankfurt becomes a vast meeting place for book professionals from around the world: publishers, literary agents, rights managers, translators, distributors, booksellers, as well as audiovisual professionals and those from the creative industries.
For LiLys Éditions, this presence is part of a clear approach: to circulate French-speaking Belgian texts and authors beyond our borders.
Frankfurt: much more than a book fair
The Frankfurter Buchmesse holds a special place in the international publishing calendar. It is primarily a major professional market where those who buy, sell, and negotiate book rights meet.
The 2026 edition will take place from 7 to 11 October and will once again bring together international publishing stakeholders around rights exchanges, translations, and the creation of new partnerships.
This dimension is particularly visible this year as the Frankfurt Rights Meeting, dedicated to rights and licenses in international publishing, celebrates its 40th anniversary. Among the topics discussed are the French-speaking and English-speaking markets as well as the issues related to the international circulation of works.
A book presented in Frankfurt can thus begin a new journey: to be translated, published in another country, meet a new publisher or, sometimes, attract the interest of other cultural sectors. The fair also develops meetings between publishing, cinema and television through its programme Book-to-Screen.
Why is the presence of French-speaking Belgian publishers important?
Francophone literature obviously does not stop at the borders of France.
Francophone Belgium has its own publishing houses, its authors, its sensitivities and a particularly diverse editorial output. However, in an immense international market, this diversity must be visible in order to be discovered.
Being present in Frankfurt allows publishers from Wallonia and Brussels to directly present their catalogues to foreign professionals, to advocate for their authors, to identify partners and to open discussions around translation and rights transfer.
The collective presence also constitutes a strength.
In 2025, 18 Walloon and Brussels publishing houses were thus gathered in the collective space "Do you read Belgian?". Wallonie-Bruxelles International emphasises that this space hosted numerous professional meetings and served as a platform for rights transfers and acquisitions.
Presenting together in Frankfurt thus makes it possible to make a French-speaking Belgian publishing scene more identifiable which, individually, could more difficultly emerge among the thousands of professionals and catalogues present.
For LiLys Éditions, the international is built book by book
Our presence in Frankfurt is part of the international development of LiLys Éditions.
A story deeply rooted in Belgium can speak to a Spanish, German, Irish, Italian reader or from elsewhere. But to cross this border, a book must first provoke a meeting: that between two publishers who decide that a text deserves a new language and a new audience.
This is precisely what we are looking for in Frankfurt.
We will present our catalogue and several titles for which we wish to develop the international journey, with particular attention paid to the translation and adaptation rights.
These meetings also allow for a better understanding of the expectations of different markets, to exchange with foreign professionals and to build collaborations that far exceed the few days of the fair.
Because the internationalisation of a catalogue is not just about translating a book: it relies on partners capable of understanding a text, defending it and finding its place with new readers.
See you in Frankfurt
From 7 to 11 October 2026, LiLys Éditions will therefore be at the heart of this great international book meeting alongside professionals from the French-speaking Belgian publishing industry.
Foreign publishers, agents, rights managers, translators and international partners: come and discover our catalogue and meet LiLys Éditions at the Wallonia-Brussels Edition space / "Do you read Belgian?".
